Did you notice the full moon this morning? In our part of the world (northern Italy), it was shining so bright we played shadow puppets on the wall after waking up, with just the light of the moon. More universal reflections on the way to school: 7year old: Did you know we’re more in the sky than we are on the Earth? Me: What do you mean? Me: 🤯 Those moments that flip your perspective on its head. As a designer, these are the moments we live for. The ones to pay attention to. The creative sparks we’re always seeking out. Often these moments feel few and far between. Lighting only strikes once, right? What if… we didn’t have to sit around and wait for lightning to strike? What if… we can somehow curate our world to provide us with these creative sparks more often? For me this starts with being aware, being alert, being awake to wonder and awe. THESE are the lighting strike moments and they are everywhere all the time. Inspiration is everywhere and Chuck Close’s often quoted ‘Inspiration is for amateurs’ are two things I believe strongly. Inspiration doesn't strike: we seek it out, and/or we’re open to it - listening like Voyager 1 in the deep of the galaxy. If you need a little nudge, I put together a short list of ways to get a new perspective on things so that those moments of wonder and awe can happen with higher frequency. Create is a verb. An action. The pursuit of inspiration. Don’t sit around and wait for it to happen. Get after it! hey Reader How do you make a plant into fabric? When we visited Otzi, the 5000 year old human found in the pre-alps about 3 hours drive from my house, the thing that fascinated me the most wasn't just his 61 tattoos. It was also how people innovated to use plants to make things to wear. Otzi was found with this incredible cloak. Can you guess what it was made from? Nothing obvious, like the reeds growing in front of you as you sit on a river bank, or the grass you touch with your hands as you...
hey Reader A question for you ... Where do you get your quilting fabric from? You might answer this with: my local quilt shop Or online Or even ‘my stash’ Would you have answered the Sudan or Peru or the Indus Valley? Maybe not, but THIS is where your quilting fabric comes from. Maybe not directly at this point in history, but almost certainly at one point in the past. Let’s embark on a Creative Odyssey through the origins of cotton, in this week’s I, Quilt. Where are we? I’m standing here,...
